Pre-prosthetic surgery

Pre-prosthetic surgery may be recommended to prepare your mouth for a perfect, custom fit with future dentures that will feel comfortable in your mouth.

Pre-prosthetic surgery for a great fit

A denture needs a stable, sturdy place to sit on the bone ridge. When a tooth needs to be extracted, the underlying bone may be left sharp and uneven, which would make a denture sit very uncomfortably in the mouth. For a comfortable and secure fit from a denture, the bone might need to be smoothed out or reshaped. Sometimes, excess bone would need to be removed prior to receiving the denture. Pre-prosthetic surgery is common in patients who have worn dentures for a long time, but no longer receive a comfortable and secure fit from them despite dental adjustments. This is because dentures do not prevent bone atrophy, so the shape of the mouth changes over time and no longer fit the denture.

Being board-certified oral surgeons, Dr. Beech and Dr. Reid have the experience and expertise needed to properly care for our patients and ensure that their mouths are ready to receive dentures. If pre-prosthetic surgery has been recommended for you, please contact us at your earliest convenience and request a consultation so that our friendly and welcoming staff can be in communication with you.
